So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye …. And Hello!

As the 2009 restoration version of our House Tableu Curtains (House Tabs) gently fall for the final time, Ted Doan our General Manager with Rosie Holdaway our Technical Manager and her amazing team and visiting contractors wave goodbye to these fabulous curtains which have graced our stage for 15 years.

The 2009 version of our House Tabs were created through the generosity of one of our benefactors and supporters creating as close a match as possible to the 1932 curtain drapes which had been in situe when The Plaza first opened her doors on October 7th 1932 and although the original curtains only lasted a few years before being replaced after they were damaged in the mid 1930s we were able to contract Theatrical Curtain and Drapery specialists J&C Joels to create as close a match as possible using the technology available to us at the time.

The Stockport Plaza Trust is passionate about the restoration of our Super Cinema and Variety Theatre so that when we proudly proclaim that ‘every day is October 7th 1932’ in The Plaza, we aim to ensure that all areas of our much loved Art Deco gem are as close as possible to the opening day condition of our venue as possible.

Following a number of years of research and with the funds and technologies now available to us, we have worked closely with J&C Joels on creating replacement House Tabs that will be as close a match as possible to those original curtains which were in situe on our opening day.

With layered foliage, sumptuous grass borders and colourful hollyhocks reaching up to a golden sky where billowing white clouds ebb across the scene, the background is perfect for beautifully coloured butterflies to soar into the sky beside a traditional beehive skep which is home to a host of busy worker bees that fly majestically upwards as they head off on their forays.

J&C Joels will be with us in a few days to fit the curtains and remove the 2009 versions for us whilst the cabling and mechanism of the existing drapes will be utulised and used for the new House Tabs so for now it is So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen and Goodbye to our old House Tabs and a very welcome Hello to our beautiful new drapes that will complete another part of The Plaza on going Maintenance and Restoration.
